But with this type of event, we don't know what is normal for the Canterbury region," Furlong said. "We assumed what we had up to September 4 was normal, but it appears it wasn't normal. We don't know what is the background condition that the Earth is now moving towards. "Each earthquake sequence is unusual, this one both because of its character and observation. "It's as well-recorded as any of this size has ever been. We are seeing things about it – things that we don't see in any other place. markrust East Cape neighbourhood evacuated as floodwaters rise 0 Jan 30 2010, 10:54 PM EST by markrust
Thread started: Jan 30 2010, 10:54 PM EST  Watch
Six people have been evacuated from a small settlement north of Gisborne as rivers swollen by heavy rain in the region threaten to flood.

The residents of Mangatuna village, north of Tolaga Bay, were moved out this morning as the Uawa River rose from it usual four metres to 11 metres.

Since last night a "phenomenal" 250mm of rain had fallen in the region, said Civil Defence controller Jon Davies.

Authorities are on alert as more rain is forecast to fall today on already saturated ground.

Residents close to the Waipaoa River, near Te Karaka, have been warned that banks could be breached if the rain continued.

The worst should be over by midnight.

Roads in the region have been hit by minor slips but remain open.

Met Service said more heavy rain was expected in the Gisborne region today, spreading to Hawke's Bay where 120-180mm was forecast near the hills and ranges until noon tomorrow. A further 40-70mm is likely after that.

As winds turned more northeast, rain was predicted to become widespread in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel Peninsula until tomorrow night or Tuesday morning.
